30th Birthday Party Information

Date: Saturday, October 25, 2025 (the actual day of my birthday) Venue: Ojo Santa Fe Resort James and I have booked a room and are staying overnight from October 25-26 at the resort. I plan on having a celebratory dinner on Saturday the 25th at their on-site restaurant, Blue Heron Restaurant. I would love to see you at any point during this weekend! Alternate title: My 300th Blog Entry (in this blog, at least) It has been almost two weeks since I returned to the United States. When booking our return flights, James and I decided to leave on May 2nd, in case there were any international workers' day events we could attend on May 1st. Unfortunately, I spent all of May 1st sick at home, far away from any rallies, the emotional stress of leaving and unbearable heat wave rendering me physically ill. Around the world, May 1st is a public holiday. It commemorates the fight for the 8-hour workday, which was won in 1886 through an uprising in Chicago . This inspired other labor activists around the world, marking May 1st as international workers' day. Ironically but unsurprisingly, the United States stripped it of its original meaning during the Cold War and declared it "Loyalty Day" instead. (I suppose I personally can still call it a loyalty day, though mine is a loyalty to the international workers' movement.) Sin...

Week 9: Musings from the end of the world

While thinking of what to do for my week of vacation in Chile after my internship ended, my first thought was to go to Rapa Nui (Easter Island). As a Filipino, I feel connected to other Austronesian island people, and I am fascinated by isolated places where humans still somehow live. But long story short, the flights were too expensive and infrequent. I had to figure out where else to go. To figure out where I should take my vacation, I opened Google Maps and randomly decided to zoom in to the end of the South American continent to see what was there. I had heard of Ushuaia, Argentina's southernmost city, before, but it would have taken me too long to get there with the time I had. I scrolled to the Chilean side of the continent and saw a city called Punta Arenas. I had never heard of it before but looked up flights there from Santiago. There were direct flights, they lasted only three hours, and a round trip ticket cost a little over $100. I was sold! Took this screenshot right ...
